Shabbos
Chazon, positioned on the calendar within the Nine Days,
is set apart from all other Shabbosos
of the year. There are certain halachos
in place that add a more serious mood to this Shabbos. For example,
although we wear our Shabbos clothing, we don’t wear our finest; and
in some shuls the Lecha Dodi
is sung in the somber melody of Eli Tzion. It is specifically
on Shabbos Chazon, that the paradox in our lives is most evident
– although we live in comfort and luxury, we are lacking the integral
component of our existence.

Secure Borders are Condition for Peace
June
28, 2010 | Eli E. Hertz
Update
Resolution 242
adopted November 22, 1967 is the cornerstone for what it calls "a just
and lasting peace." It calls for a negotiated solution based on "secure
and recognized boundaries" - recognizing the flaws in Israel's
previous temporary borders - the 1948 Armistice lines or the "Green
Line."

After trying unsuccessfully to discern
a moment when it would be auspicious for him to curse Bnai Yisroel,
Bilaam finally realized that he would have to bless them as Hashem wished
him to do. He then began with the famous blessing, “Mah tovu
oholecha Yaakov mishkenosecha Yisroel
– how goodly are your tents, Yaakov, your dwelling places, Yisroel.”

This week’s parsha
presents the law of parah adumah
– the red heifer. The ashes of the parah adumah
are used to purify people who had become tomei.
In that process, the people who were involved in its preparation became
tomei themselves.

Spain's Pro-Israel Tag Team
David Harris, AJC Executive Director

At first glance, it's an unlikely duo.
José Maria Aznar, Spain's prime minister from 1996 to 2004, hails from the political right.
Pilar Rahola, a Barcelona-based journalist and former parliamentarian, is a left-wing activist.
But Aznar and Rahola share at least one important passion - defending Israel.

CONFESSION
In this week’s parsha
we read of Korach’s rebellion against Moshe and Aharon. Korach
was envious of their priestly honors and leadership and instigated a
campaign against them. Although Moshe tried to discourage Korach
to abandon his fatal desire for honor, he was unsuccessful. Moshe
then prayed for Divine intervention to confirm his G-d-given authority.
“If Hashem will create a phenomenon … and they will descend alive
to the pit, then you shall know that these men have provoked Hashem.”
(Bamidbar 16:30)
